History of the Mponeng (Western Deep No. 1 Shaft) Project |
The mine, which poured its first gold in 1986, has been expanded through a series of deepening projects, the most recent being the extension from 109 to 120 level, or some 3,400 meters below surface. The Mponeng mine consists of a two shaft system from surface to 85 level and a triple sub-shaft system down to 120 level.

Geology of the Mponeng (Western Deep No. 1 Shaft) Project |
|
Mponeng is located on the north-western rim of the Witwatersrand Basin. There are seven gold bearing conglomerates within the lease area, of which two are economically viable at present. The VCR is a gold-bearing quartz-pebble conglomerate of intermediate grade, capping the last angular Witwatersrand non-conformity.
