| Chesapeake Energy attracts calls | |
| | |
|
Chesapeake Energy has been hammered in the last year, but at least one investor is looking for a rebound by early 2016.
optionMONSTER's Heat Seeker system detected the purchase of 3,000 January 17 calls for the ask price of $0.90 at the same second this morning. This is clearly a new position, as open interest in the strike was just 885 contracts before the session began.
These long calls lock in the price where the stock can be purchased through mid-January no matter how far it might climb. They could be sold earlier at a profit if premiums rise with a rally before then, providing potentially significant leverage, but the contracts will expire worthless if shares remain below $17. CHK is off 0.64 percent to $14.02 and down some 28 percent this year. The oil and natural-gas producer has lost nearly half its market value in the last 12 months and is near a support level from mid-March.
Overall option volume is well below its full-session average so far, but total calls are outpacing puts by 4 to 1.
