Q1 Earnings Season in Final Stretch
The flood of Q1 earnings announcements continues this week, with over one thousand companies reporting results, including 85 S&P 500 members. It’s the last big reporting week for the large-cap index, as by the end of this week we will have seen Q1 results from 89% of the index’s total membership.
The reporting cycle isn’t quite that further along for the small-caps at this stage. But after this week’s barrage of earnings announcements from 691 Russell 2000 members, we will have seen results from 77% of the small-cap index’s total membership.
Plenty of reports are still to come, but we don’t need to see more results to conclude that this has been a pretty weak earnings season in every respect. We knew that growth will be difficult following the massive revisions to estimates in the run up to the start of the Q1 earnings season. But despite those sharp revisions to estimates ahead of this reporting cycle, companies are struggling to beat revenue estimates.
At this stage in the Q1 reporting cycle, the ratio of companies beating revenue estimates is the lowest that we have seen in the recent past. Of the headwinds, the impact of the strong U.S. dollar appears to have been the most critical variable in keeping the top-lines under pressure. We knew that the strong dollar would be a problem – it was an issue in the Q4 earnings season as well. But analysts appear to have underestimated its full impact on Q1 results. Small-cap stocks that typically don’t have as much exposure to currency movements as large-cap operators along the lines of S&P 500 members do aren’t missing top-line estimates to the same magnitude.
Before we dig into the results already on the books, let’s pinpoint the key earnings reports coming out this week Monday –Comcast (CMCSA) in the morning and EOG Resources (EOG) after the market’s close are the key reports among the 14 S&P 500 members on the docket today. A number of other exploration and production (E&P) companies will be reporting results today and the rest of this week. Tuesday –On a very busy day with more than 270 companies reporting results, including 35 S&P 500 members, the notable ones are Disney (DIS), News Corp. (NWSA) and Fossil (FOSL) reporting after the close, to name just a few. Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research? Today, you can download 7 Best Stocks for the Next 30 Days.
