NAIROBI, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's overall inflation rose to 6.39 percent in July from 5.8 percent in the previous month due to price increases in some food items, the national statistics bureau said on Friday.

"Between June and July, Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks' Index increased by 1.12 percent as a result of increase in prices of some food items which outweighed those that declined," the agency said in a statement.

Inflation has been decreasing since December 2015 due to the decline in the global crude oil prices.

However, it started rising in June and now July, which is likely to push up the cost of living due to rising prices of food and fuel.

Some food items that recorded price increases are maize flour, tomatoes and sugar. The Energy Regulatory Commission mid this month raised the prices of diesel and petrol that included the additional 0.06 U.S. dollars road maintenance levy.

According to the bureau, the Transport Index over the same period rose by 1.13 percent in July compared to June mainly driven by prices of increases in pump prices of petrol and diesel. Enditem
