US Mint Sales of Baseball Silver Coins Return Briefly

Results in the latest sales stats from the United States Mint were mixed with winners and losers. The 2014 Silver Proof Set remained at the top with strong sales, while negative adjustments were made to the curve-shaped 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Coins. That turned out good for collectors wanting more.

Baseball silver proofs plummeted by 2,417 to 265,430 and the uncirculated silver coins dropped by 906 to 131,004. With the latest changes, the total units sold went down to 396,434, which is 3,566 away from the maximum mintage.

Both Baseball silver coins had been listed as sold out for more than 7 months but the Mint started selling them again on Tuesday, noting that credit card cancellations made more available. In a statement, the Mint said in part:

"On April 21, 2014, the United States Mint ceased accepting wait-list orders and declared a sellout of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Dollars. The Mint canceled all orders that could not be fulfilled due to payment issues, after giving those customers every opportunity to provide updated credit card information for possible fulfillment. These credit card cancellations made additional Baseball Hall of Fame silver dollar proof and uncirculated inventory available.

However, both Baseball silver coins are gone again as the Mint now has them listed as Out of Stock and without a Remind Me option. It is possible a few more could sell later if there are further cancellations. The Mint, at this time, has not stamped them as sold out.

Returning to sales states, the top three silver product sellers were the 2014 Silver Proof Set, which gained 10,863, followed by the 2014-W Proof Silver Eagle with an increase of 6,821, and the 2014 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection with an increase of 5,643. It should be noted that the Kennedy collection is within 40,000 of its mintage limit of 225,000.

More decliners in the silver category was the recently sold out 2014-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle, which fell by 88 to 225,253, and the sold out 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains 5 Ounce Silver Coin, which shed 2 to 24,720.
