Wallace Street Journal: The World is not Billy Bob's Rib Pit |
| I yield my column space today to one Fred Reed, an ex-pat living in Mexico, who publishes the website fredoneverything.net.
His thoughts are provocative and feather-ruffling, but worthy of consideration. Reed has been on staff for the Army Times, the Washingtonian, Soldier of Fortune, Federal Computer Week and the Washington Times. The following appeared on 10 March.

Neo-Con War Addiction Threatens Our Future |
| William Kristol knows what is wrong with the United States. As he wrote recently
in the flagship magazine of the neo-conservatives, the Weekly Standard, the
problem with the US is that we seem to have lost our appetite for war. According
to Kristol, the troubles that have befallen us in the 20th century have all
been the result of these periodic bouts of war-weariness, a kind of virus
that we catch from time to time.
He claims because of the US "drawdown" in Europe after World WarMonday, March 25, 2013 |

| What in Space Are We Doing? |
| By Doug Hornig, Senior EditorMost of the time, most of us give little thought to the fact that our home planet is located somewhere in space, and that out there is what used to be called the "final frontier." When we think about space at all, we tend not to envision it as something to explore, like we used to back in the early days of NASA and the race to the moon. More likely, it's just the place where all those satellites are – the ones that enable us to post trivial Facebook messages to palsSunday, March 03, 2013 |

Beware The Consequences of Pre-Emptive War |
| Last year more US troops died by suicide than
died in combat in Afghanistan. More than 20 percent of military personnel
deployed to combat will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some
32 percent of US soldiers reported depression after deployments. More than
20 percent of active-duty military are on potentially dangerous psychotropic
drugs; many are on multiple types. Violent crime among active duty military
members increased 31 percent between 2006-2011.

| Here we are once again. In spite of $trillion deficits as far as the eye can see, neither Obama nor the Democrats want to do anything about it.
Please consider Obama to Urge Congress to Delay Automatic Spending Cuts
President Barack Obama will urge Congress to postpone automatic spending reductions scheduled to begin March 1 as Senate Democrats debate options for replacing part of the $1.2 trillion in across-the-board cuts.
Obama will ask Congress to delay “deep, indiscriminate cuts to domFriday, February 08, 2013 |

| What We Now Know |
| It is said that death and taxation are the only certainties in life.Expanding on that list, however, we also know there are "physical laws" derived from extensive observations, in some cases dating back to antiquity. For example, sticking fingers in fires will result in unpleasantness. Then there is the realm of what one might call "common knowledge." For example, the historical record makes it appear certain that, universally, power corrupts the human mind, and the greater the powerSaturday, February 02, 2013 |

| Wallace — Your reading assignments for 2013 are as follows: 1984, by George Orwell, and JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why it Matters, by James W. Douglass. Both are available in hard-back, softback, and Kindle editions.
And both will scramble your brain, just a little bit. And I'm going to be a bit stuffy about this.Thursday, January 03, 2013 |

He was, again, commenting on Fed policy and if you think it is Fed-Speak for "dangerously impractical", you're right. He continued with:

How to End the Tragedy in Gaza |
|
As of late Friday the ceasefire in Gaza seems to be holding, if tentatively. While we should be pleased that this round of fighting appears temporarily on hold, we must realize that without changes in US foreign policy it is only a matter of time before the killing begins again.
It feels like 2009 all over again, which is the last time this kind of violence broke out in Gaza.Tuesday, November 27, 2012 |

How Sustainable are China's Copper, Cotton, Steel Imports? Fresh Thinking on Balance of Payments |
| Inquiring minds as well as commodity bulls need to consider the likely economic impact of China's commodity imports and how sustainable those imports are.
For example, please considerChina’s Cotton Reserves Enough to Meet Deficit for Six Years
Cotton stockpiles in China, the world’s biggest importer, are set to climb to about 9 million metric tons this season, enough to cover the country’s deficit for the next six years, according toAllenberg Cotton Co.Wednesday, November 21, 2012 |

On the Inconvenient Truths of US Foreign Policy |
| Let's look at the bright side: first, as you mentioned, Obama will get blamed for the Greater Depression. But also, Romney appeared even more warlike than Obama, and war is the health of the state. Despite the US's huge, unsustainable deficits, he actually promised to increase military spending – presumably using money borrowed from the Chinese. Plus, he promised not to cut medical and welfare spending. But those are consequences we'll never see now.Friday, November 16, 2012 |

| How Far Could the Stock Market Fall? |
| We are heading back into a serious recession that will be similar to the crisis of confidence in 1974 with the Nixon impeachment. During Nixon's landslide victory for a second term and the ensuing Watergate impeachment, I lived in Washington DC and watched the ensuing chaos with a front-row seat.Monday, November 12, 2012 |

On the Election of 2012 |
| Purely for entertainment purposes, I'll stick my neck out and predict an Obama win. Perhaps a deeper reason for this is that the electorate itself has become corrupted – even more than they were four years ago.
When more than half of voters receive some kind of government subsidy or another, they can always be counted upon to vote for more government largess, and the game is essentially over?
Doug: It's a serious problem of mass psychology. Most people today think that whenever there's a problem, it's the government's job to "do something" about it. Obama is – at least as far as his rhetoric goes – much more activist about "doing things" than Romney. On the other hand, all politicians are enthusiastic and skilled liars. So Romney might go wild with social programs, all the while saying something idiotic about trying to save capitalism.Friday, November 02, 2012 |

How America Treats Its Own |
|
This weekend, I was moved to tears by a segment on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show.I was leery of writing of it, for fear the “ULTIMATE DIVIDER” – politics – might rear its ugly head. However, I ASSURE you this piece will touch ALL Americans – as it rightfully should. This has NOTHING to do with Democrats or Republicans – but government in general; and thus, the appalling way “AMERICA TREATS ITS OWN”…
Veterans’ unemployment — a national disgrace
The segment was done in two parts; the first, describing how Congress (again, NOT “Republicans” or “Democrats”; but GOVERNMENT) refused to pass a bill providing funding to integrate returning veterans into the work force…
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart World of Warshaft
Yes, a measly $1 billion – over five years – was not deemed worthwhile to help the naïve youths TRICKED into serving via PROPAGANDA about Iraq…
Study: Bush, aides made 935 false statements in run-up to war
…and Afghanistan…
Americans not hearing about Afghanistan War Casualties because media doesn’t broadcast them
…which combined, have taken the lives of roughly 10,000 foreign soldiers, journalists, and workers – mostly American; let alone, hundreds of thousands PARALYZED, MAIMED, or otherwise INJURED…
Casualties in Iraq/Afghanistan
…let alone, millions of innocent civilians…
…often, due to being kept in-country LONG after the termination of prescribed tours…
Stop-loss policy
…in wars NEVER approved by Congress, per Constitutional mandate…
Did Congress approve America’s longest war?
…that thus far, have cumulatively cost $3.Thursday, November 01, 2012 |

The Lincoln Curse (Obama Edition) |

In an essay entitled "Lincoln, the Declaration, and Secular Puritanism: A Rhetoric for Continuing Revolution," the late literary scholar Mel Bradford explained the ideological genesis of American military and foreign policy that has prevailed since 1863.Lincoln’s "erroneous understanding of the Declaration of Independence" as espoused in The Gettysburg Address, wrote Bradford, established "a rhetoric for continuing revolution" and "set us forever to ‘trampling out the grapes of wrath.Tuesday, October 30, 2012 |
