Author collates science and sweat of oilsands past |
Oil sands scientist Karl Clark (right) and unidentified assistants, c. 1950
Some years ago, the Calgary Herald's Stephen Ewart attended a presentation I gave on the oil sands, and wrote it up for his newspaper. That talk formed the basis of a book I recently published. Titled Bitumen: The people, performance and passions behind Alberta's oil sands and registered as a Canada 150 project, it went on sale through Amazon today; a Kindle version follows next week. Here's the table of contents.

By Stephen Ewart.
With so much discussion and debate about the future of oilsands development these days, Peter McKenzie-Brown is one of the few voices urging people to reflect on its history.
The Calgary author is actually relying on the voices of the pioneers of oilsands development going back decades as he interviews the captains of the industry, the technological innovators and the people with their boots on the ground to create an oral history of the oil-sands.Take the experiences of Tom MSaturday, January 28, 2017 |

Midweek Sector Update: The Largest Three-Day Rally In Twenty Years, Can It Last |
Bolstering that possibility is new data showing lower U.S. oil production. On August 31, the EIA revised downwards its estimates for U.S. oil production, due to more accurate survey-based reporting. The EIA estimates that the U.S. produced 9.3 million barrels of oil per day (mb/d) in June, a drop of 100,000 barrels per day from May. Moreover, May numbers were revised downwards. Most notable were the revisions for Texas for the first half of this year, which the EIA says produced 100,000 to 150,0Tuesday, September 1, 2015 |

Caribou are a symbol of Canada’s northern forests, but
their populations are under threat for a number of reasons. Other kinds of
ungulate – white-tailed deer, for example – are migrating into their habitat,
for example. This attracts wolves which, by increasing in population and range,
have become a greater threat to these iconic mammals.
Human activity, of course, has played important roles in
these developments. That makes it all Sunday, September 21, 2014 |

Questioning the Economic Logic of Canada’s LNG Export Strategy |
The stampede of would-be energy exporters to Canada’s west coast is potentially a headlong rush into folly, if the economics are considered. Never mind the ecological risks, there is an as-yet unmeasured cost to the robust eco-tourism, sport fisheries, and recreational travel industries that has not been adequately addressed in media or by the government of British Columbia.
But Canada’s eagerness to build using other people’s money might seem like a good idea, but what are the risks to Canada aTuesday, April 29, 2014 |
