The Gold-Silver Opposites Report, 17 Apr, 2016
Well that was interesting. Gold went down over thirty bucks and silver went up over thirty cents. How much longer can this silver rally continue in the face of gold’s nonparticipation? Will speculators really be comfortable bidding silver up to $20 while gold sits at $1200? Do the fundamentals support a higher silver price? How is silver different from gold? Aside from being a lot cheaper per ounce, and that an ounce of silver is almost twice as bulky as an ounce of gold. There are two differenc

The gold price moved up $18. However, the silver price moved up 60 cents which is a much bigger percentage. The silver community is getting pretty excited. A market trend will often begin when a small number of traders learn something new. As they begin buying (or selling), the price begins to move. Others become aware of the truth, and they begin buying. There’s just one problem with these moves. By the time most people hear about it, the fundamentals have changed. Oh the discovery may still be

The Most Prescient Statement Ever Made
Major, major tremors in the global financial system; and ironically, the epicenter of the “Big One” may well be Switzerland.  This tiny nation, most famous for its neutrality, is on the front line of the “Gold Wars”; and as we wrote in yesterday’s “call to the Swiss,” its eight million people have the opportunity to slay the evil banking Empire with just four million or so votes.  Then again, the best things often come in small packages; and the worst, too, like, Cyprus – a nation of just one mi

Petrodollar - Russia, China, and other countries are forced to structure a new monetary system due to the unsustainbility of the Western monetary system and central bank policy. Backwardation in Gold And Silver
On Monday, May 14, something happened that hasn't happened since Dec of 2008. Two successive near-month precious metals futures contracts were in backwardation at the same time. To oversimplify, backwardation is when the price of a futures contract is lower than the price in the spot market. It should not be possible for it to happen in gold and silver (see my piece http://keithweiner.posterous.com/when-gold-backwardation-becomes-permanent). But ever since Dec 2008, it has been recurring

Temporary Backwardation: The Path Forward from 2008
The March silver futures contract first entered backwardation on Mar 9 and with a few zigs and zags has not only remained there but has gone deeper and deeper in.The April gold future just entered backwardation today.See the graph (backwardation is when (Spot(bid) - Future(offer) > 0). We shall see what the coming days bring for the April gold future, but the fact that backwardation has occurred at all is significant.

On Friday, I published an article: The Arbitrageur: Silver Backwardation. I was the only one to cover the news of the end of silver backwardation. And I gave my prediction that the price of silver could correct sharply. This piece presents my analysis and theory of what happened. This will necessarily include some educated guesses, as the big financial firms don't have a hotline by which they share their problems and plans with me. Let's start with what we know. The Arbitrageur: Silver Backwardation
Ever since early fall 2010, long-dated silver futures have been in backwardation. This means the price of a silver future for, say, Dec 2015, was *lower* than the price of silver in the spot market. One could have earned a "risk free" profit by simultaneously selling physical silver and buying a future. When the future delivered, one would have the same silver holding. The trade would require no credit, only that one have silver (which many people and banks do). And yet for nearly a

Massive Silver Correction Makes Silver Incredibly Cheap
The European turmoil is roiling global markets as counterparties increasingly distrust each other’s collateral leading to the liquidation of pretty much everything. The mantra must be, “If there is a bid then hit it.” This daily noise has opened up some tremendous buying opportunities.Chief among those opportunities is silver.

We should not equate gold and silver backwardation with the backwardation of commodities. Commodity backwardation can be rectified if the fiat currency is still accepted, whereas with gold and silver backwardation, it is completely to do with the failure of the monetary system
