What makes gold good money
People say that gold is rare this is why it makes good money. To make an analogy to the porridge in Goldilocks, the temperature could not be too cold or too hot. If gold were too common, or too rare, it would not work as money. Think of sand, which is too common, or blue diamonds which are too rare (and diamonds would not work as money anyway. Rather than focusing on its rarity, let’s look at extracting it. It has generally held true that the cost to mine an ounce of gold was around one ounce of

  Understanding money and prices
This article explains the money side of prices, and why government currencies, unbacked by gold, are doomed to collapse. And why gold, which is the sound money chosen by markets throughout history, will retain or increase its purchasing power measured in the goods it buys over the coming years.Very few people have a full understanding of the relationship between money and goods. This is the relationship that sets prices. Yet, without that understanding, central banks will almost certainly fail i

Should Self-Sufficient Countries Trade
Countries that are self-sufficient have enough resources to meet the demands of their citizens. Such countries do not need to trade, but there is advantage to be gained by trading. These benefits are three-fold: reduced prices, a tradable surplus, and/or reduced work hours for their citizens. I will illustrate this principle using two commodities - spice and coal - from two hypothetical countries: Zamunda and Elbonia. For this illustration we need to agree on the following assumption:

3 Modern Arguments for Tariffs, Debunked
Many proponents of tariffs recognize the absurdity of tariffs as a general rule. However, they feel that there are certain, special cases in which tariffs are justified, and indeed vital to a nation's survival. In  this article, I will analyze three such arguments: I. REDUCE TRADE DEFICIT Many people believe that a tariff on a specific country's goods is necessary whenever the United States suffers from a high trade de

The egregious errors of static statistics
The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. Lord Macaulay wrote this nearly two hundred years ago. His aphorism is particularly apposite of modern politicians, and also of the modern state itself, which is meant to be selfless in the interest of the common good. We can be certain that when a person moves from outside to inside the machinery of the state, he or she changes from representing the people to representing the state. Presumably ther

Trump Plays with Fire on Trade
With his announcement last week of broad tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, President Trump launched what could be the first salvo of an all-out global trade war. Seemingly itching for a fight, he gleefully tweeted that “Trade wars are good, and easy to win.” It seems like Trump thinks the conflict will play out much like Ronald Reagan’s 1983 week-long invasion of Grenada rather than the more telling quagmires that unfolded in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. He’s wrong. Apart from overestim

Gold Flirts with $1300 on Solid US, Euro Inflation Data But China's Demand to Buy Supports
BUY GOLD prices in London's wholesale market erased the last of 2018's previous 4.9% gain on Thursday, falling back near $1300 per ounce after new US inflation data came in stronger than analysts forecast. The PCE measure of US consumer costs rose 1.7% in January from the same month last year, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported, holding the same pace of inflation as December.

Gold Prices Steady from Powell's Fed Rate Forecast, Platinum Up 6 for 2018 Despite 'Death Knell for Diesel'
GOLD PRICES steadied at multi-week lows on Wednesday as the Dollar paused its gains but world stock markets followed Wall Street lower after new Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell told US lawmakers to expect further interest rate hikes. Extending its sharpest 1-week drop of 2018 to date, gold fell another $20 per ounce between Tuesday morning and the end of London trade yesterday, bouncing off a 2-week low of $1314 overnight.

Gold Price Falls as Fed's Powell Speaks, US Data Miss Badly, Euro Confidence 'Elevated'
GOLD PRICES fell as new US Fed chair Jerome Powell began his first testimony to lawmakers on Tuesday, retreating to last week's closing level as the US Dollar rallied from a fresh drop on the currency market. New data meantime missed analyst forecasts, showing the US trade deficit in goods widening badly even as orders for larger domestic applicances and other durable goods sank 3.7% from the month before, led by a hard drop in vehi

Unsound money is crucifying pensions
Deficits are mounting in pension obligations. It is a global problem over which pension trustees are helpless. It is also a problem that’s brushed under the carpet, with prospective and current pensioners generally unaware of the threat to their retirement. Investors in companies with defined benefit schemes, schemes which promise an inflation-adjusted entitlement based on final salary, generally ignore this important issue, as do most stock market analysts. Analysts know the deficits are there,

Your Prepper Stockpile: How To Add More Fruits And Veggies To Your Inventory
Building a usable supply of fruits and vegetable is difficult for some preppers. Many of us struggle with this aspect of prepping, but there are a few simple steps you can take if you’re looking to add fruit or vegetables to your prepper stockpile. It is difficult in a SHTF situation to get the fruit and vegetables the human body needs, but without them, you and your family can be at risk for a nutritional deficiency disease such as scurvy (which results from a lack of vitamin C) and immune syst

Bond Market Bear Creating Gold Bull
Gold is climbing as bond yields rise and the dollar falls, over speculation that China is pulling back on buying US Treasuries and Japan signals it is winding down its quantitative easing program. Meanwhile, US debt continues to grow after the Republicans under President Trump pushed a trillion dollars worth of tax cuts through the Senate, that the Congressional Budget Office thinks will add $1.7 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. The dollar, 10 year yields and golds price

The truth about trade
The one subject, which became a headline issue last year, and even divides experts is trade. It will become increasingly important in 2018 as the US develops her trade policy, particularly with respect to China, and as the UK negotiates her Brexit terms with the EU. Ignorance dominates this subject. Surely, people say, industry should be protected from unfair trade practices, such as goods manufactured in foreign sweat-shops, or unfair dumping of commodities, such as steel. If President Trump ca

Gold Price Slips from 30-Month Yen High as Beijing Calls 'Fake News' on US T-Bond Rumor
GOLD PRICES rose back above $1320 per ounce against a weakening US Dollar on Thursday as major government bond yields rose once more and Beijing played down rumors it might stop or cut its demand for US government debt. Responding to Wednesday's claims from Bloomberg that the People's Bank may stop buying Treasuries as a protest against President Donald Trump's rhetoric on China's trade surplus with the US, "We learned the news thro

  One-year score card for Trump
We understand our politicians to be human, with much that that implies. In a democracy, politics is a competitive business, which means that generally well-balanced individuals tend to succeed, while those who are obviously unbalanced do not. And as for political power corrupting individuals, that is normally limited by the obligation to periodically seek an electoral mandate. That, at least is the theory, but in late-2016, the election of President-elect Donald Trump caused us all to question t

Gold Prices Jump with Yen, Shrug Off Bond Yields, on China-US Bonds Rumor
GOLD PRICES jumped 1.2% against a plunging Dollar in London trade Wednesday morning, setting the highest bullion-market benchmark in 4 months as financial markets whipped on rumors that China may stop buying more US government debt for its huge foreign currency reserves. Bloomberg News says officials running China's $3.14 trillion of central-bank reserves have "recommended" reducing or pausing the purchase of US Treasury bonds, blam

U.S. Gold Market Switches From A Surplus In 2016 To Deficit In 2017
The U.S. gold market suffered a net deficit this year compared to a small surplus in 2016.  This was quite interesting because U.S. physical gold demand will be down considerably this year.  In 2016, total U.S. gold demand was 212 metric tons versus an estimated 150 metric tons this year.  The majority of the decline in U.S. gold demand is from the physical bar and coin sector that is down 56% in the first three quarters of 2017 compared to the same period last year. So, why will the U.S. gold ma

Donald Trump – Modern Day Walpole
“Hatred of Walpole was almost the only feeling which was common to them. On this one point they concentrated their whole strength. With gross ignorance, or gross dishonesty, they represented the Minister as the main grievance of the state. His dismissal, his punishment, would prove the certain cure for all the evils which the nation suffered. What was to be done after his fall, how misgovernment was to be prevented in the future, were questions to which there were as many answers as there were n
