The Never-Ending Wars of the United States of America
A Monday Morning Musing from Mickey the Mercenary Geologist"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefi

Financial crisis dynamics, the ‘shadow’ gold demand, and Mene
The study of financial crises is as old as the economics discipline itself. One of the most prominent theorists of financial crises ever to hold a senior Federal Reserve policy position was John Exter, vice-president of the New York Federal Reserve during the 1950s. Several years ago I co-wrote a series of essays on Exter’s theories together with his sonin- law, Barry Downs. In this paper, building on Exter’s work, including his eponymous ‘pyramid’, I introduce a new ‘hourglass’ framework for un

Brexit – the battle for ideas
The battle for ideas in the Brexit debate comes down to two basic economic approaches. The neo-Keynesian macroeconomists in the permanent establishment, who manage the state as economic planners and regulators are on one side. They are naturally sympathetic with the policies and ideals of their EU counterparts. Against them are those who argue that in economics free markets must have primacy over the state. It is turning out to be a modern rerun of the socialist calculation debate. In a communist

Germany's gold repatriation leader elected chairman of Bundestag's budget committee
By Guy Chazan Financial Times, London Wednesday, January 31, 2018 An MP for the far-right Alternative for Germany has been elected chairman of the German Bundestag's powerful budget committee, in a significant coup for the populist party. A fierce Eurosceptic who has criticised the eurozone bailouts and attacked Angela Merkel’s liberal refugee policy, Peter Boehringer once described Germany's Muslim population as "a great danger to our state." Chairmanship of the budget committee, which has a

How Much Should Homes Cost (To Rent)
Previously, we looked into how much homes should cost. Basically, we concluded that the cost of homes should be a function of construction costs, which are basically stable, profit and some other non-construction costs such as corporate overhead, and land costs. Since there is no particular shortage of land in any U.S. city today, there is no particular reason for very high land costs; and thus, no particular reason why homes should cost very much more than construction costs. And Now Comes the Internet Censorship
"A credibility trap is when the regulatory, political and/or informational functions of a society have been so compromised by a long term, generalcorruption that they cannot address any meaningful reform without implicating, at least incidentally, themselves.  The status quo has at least tolerated the corruption and fraud, if not profited directly from it, and most likely continues to do so.  The power brokers have become susceptible to various forms of blackmail.  And so a failed policy is sust

French President To CENSOR THE MEDIA By Making Certain News Illegal
French President Emmanuel Macron says he will push a new law aimed at cracking down on alternative media and news that isn’t liberal. He invoked the term “fake news” saying he hopes to have the law in place by the end of the year. Oh, the irony of guys like Macron thinking censorship is “freedom.” Speaking at a news conference at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Wednesday, Macron said such a law was essential, especially during elections. Sure.  We can’t be having people pointing out that Macron is

Imaginations of the Misguided
aheadoftheherd.com The end of the world as we know it It’s Christmas 2017 and North Korean Dear Leader Kim Jong-un is facing a crisis. Recently the United States, with UN approval, imposed the harshest round of economic sanctions yet on his reclusive regime. While North Korea has been sanctioned since 2006 due to continuing attempts to develop nuclear weapons, this new provocation by its sworn nemesis is the last straw for Kim, who feels the great legacies of his father and grandfather, Kim

Europe, Brexit and the credit cycle
Europe’s financial and systemic troubles have retreated from the headlines. This is partly due to the financial media’s attention switching to President Trump and the US budget negotiations, partly due to Brexit and the preoccupation with Britain’s problems, and partly due to evidence of economic recovery in the Eurozone, at long last. And finally, anyone who can put digit to computer key has been absorbed by the cryptocurrency phenomenon.Just because commentary is focused elsewhere does not mea

Bitcoin is the new crisis currency
About a third of the customers queuing at La Maison du Bitcoin's teller windows in Paris aren't speculating on the value of the cryptocurrency. They're sending digital money home to Africa. “In many countries in Africa, there are far more cellphones than bank accounts,” said Manuel Valente, co-founder of La Maison. “For bitcoin, all you need is a phone.” Zimbabwe, where the price of bitcoin spiked to double the international rate after this week's military takeover, shows Jamie Dimon, Axel Weber

Shilling for Bundesbank, FT avoids key questions about gold
Yesterday the Financial Times continued its campaign to persuade the world that nothing deceptive is going on in the gold sector, publishing a long article lauding the German Bundesbank and its board member, Carl-Ludwig Thiele, for flawlessly arranging the repatriation of some of the central bank's gold from London, Paris, and New York. At least the article, appended here, quotes the founder of Germany's "Repatriate Our Gold" campaign, Peter Boehringer, who just has been elected to the country's
