A man has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after a crash involving two lorries and a van on the M25, which has been closed between junctions eight (Reigate) and nine (Leatherhead).

The collision at about 8.10am on Monday (March 26) caused an oil spillage on clockwise lanes, which were closed while emergency services attempted to get the road cleared and reopened.

A van was involved in the collision as well as two articulated lorries.

Highways England estimated delays of up to 90 minutes on the approach of the clockwise lanes after the oil covered all four lanes.

The motorway was closed between junctions eight and nine while investigations took place.

Lane four was opened so traffic that had been caught up in the incident could move.

A Highways England spokesman said: "It is likely to be closed for sometime while investigations take place."

The driver of one of the lorries was airlifted to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south west London, while the other occupants of the other vehicles involved in the collision suffered minor injuries.

Surrey Road Cops tweeted: “@HighwaysSEAST are working to open lane 4 of the #M25 past the scene. There is a considerable fuel leak across all 4 lanes.

“This is both very dangerous especially to motorcyclists and if not cleared will cause damage to the road surface. We thank you for your patience.”

Traffic building up on the M25

A Surrey Police spokesman said at 11am on Monday (March 26): " It is hoped that the fourth lane of the motorway will reopen soon but motorists are advised that there are long delays on the clockwise carriageway.

"There is also a build-up of traffic on the anti-clockwise carriageway due to motorists slowing down to look at what’s going on."

Driver Nicole Gr said she sat in standstill traffic for two hours while heading towards Chobham from Redhill.

Anti-clockwise lanes were closed as the air ambulance attended the scene but they were reopened at roughly 10am the same morning.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the collision or who have any information that could assist them to contact them on 101, quoting PR/P18069150.
