Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - PotashCorp is helping the Saskatoon Friendship Inn Fill the Plate this holiday season with a $100,000 matching gift to its fundraising campaign.
'The Friendship Inn provides welcoming surroundings and a warm meal when people need them most,' said Jochen Tilk, PotashCorp's President and Chief Executive Officer.
'Our support of the Friendship Inn is one way we help Saskatoon's vulnerable citizens get access to the nutritious food they need. Helping our community become more food secure is a natural fit for us, given that we are in the business of helping the world grow more food.'
This is the third year that PotashCorp is matching all donations to the Fill the Plate campaign, up to $100,000. PotashCorp is also sponsoring the Christmas meal that will be served at the Friendship Inn on Christmas Day.
The Friendship Inn reports that the number of people using its services is up 26 percent from last year. Serving more than 1,000 meals each day, at a cost of $5 per person, means daily costs average $5,000. The goal of the Fill the Plate campaign is to raise enough money to cover the cost of meals for each day in December.
'Many people in Saskatoon continue to struggle to meet their basic needs,' said Sandra Stack, Executive Director of the Friendship Inn. 'These men, women and children each have a story - often heartbreaking. PotashCorp's generosity allows us to feed children, families, seniors and the homeless, and connect to those seeking support.'
As the world's largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global population rising and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such as potash, phosphates and nitrogen offer a responsible and practical solution to help produce the food we need, from the land we have.
