After recent weakness, gold enjoyed a bullish stint on Monday, witnessing its biggest one day rise to over $1,200 an ounce since January. This upsurge was triggered by the news that Venezuela has inked a deal with Citigroup Inc. C to pawn its gold in a bid to mitigate soaring inflation, shrinking economy and depressed oil prices.

For over a month, Citigroup and Venezuela have been negotiating a gold swap deal. Per the deal, the Venezuelan bank would provide 1.4 million troy ounces of gold in exchange for cash. After four years, it would have right of first refusal to buy the gold back. During this tenure, the Venezuelan central bank would be paying interest to Citibank on the borrowed money.

What the Deal Means for Venezuela?

Venezuela’s economy is currently reeling under the pressure of falling oil prices. A founding member of OPEC, Venezuela has been one of the world’s leading exporters of oil since it was discovered in the country in early 20th century. At present, the nation is significantly dependent on oil as it accounts for 95% of export earnings.

The most striking sign of the country’s financial crisis is its rapidly weakening currency, Bolivar, which is caught in a downward spiral. The IMF recently slashed its forecast for the country’s economy to a 7% decline in GDP on top of an estimated 4% fall last year.

Gold accounts for about 71% of Venezuela’s foreign reserves, according to the World Gold Council. The move to liquidate gold would provide much needed cash to the Nicolas Maduro government to meet its internal and external commitments.

What’s in Store for Citigroup?

Citigroup benefitted from the deal as the gold was swapped at a lower price and stands to gain further if Venezuela is forced to buy back its gold at a higher price later. Lower the gold price, the more ounces of gold Citigroup gets in exchange for the amount loaned to Venezuela. Hence, it’s a win-win situation for Citigroup as it will be earning interest income from the loan plus the price appreciation on its gold holdings.

Shares of Newmont Mining surged 2.4% on Monday. Apart from the rise in gold prices, this was also triggered by its upbeat results reported on Apr 23. Newmont’s earnings per share surged 91.7% to 46 cents per share, trumping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 22 cents by a wide margin aided by lower all-in-sustaining costs (“AISC”).

Newmont remains on track to meet its 2015 outlook for gold and maintains its guidance which stands between 4.6 million and 4.9 million attributable ounces of gold, at CAS (costs applicable to sales) between $660 and $710 per ounce and AISC between $960 and $1,020 per ounce.

Newmont currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). The stock is currently trading at a forward P/E of 22.48, at a discount to the industry average of 27.03.

Barrick Gold Corp. ABX

Shares of Barrick gained 2.24% yesterday on the surge in gold prices. This was despite the fact that Barrick Gold reported a 75% drop in its adjusted earnings per share for the first quarter of 2015 to 5 cents and also missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 10 cents. Lower pricing for both gold and copper along with the impact of 233,000 fewer gold ounces sold in the quarter led to the decline in earnings.

Nevertheless, Barrick Gold’s full-year gold operating guidance remains on track for 6.2-6.6 million ounces at all-in sustaining costs of $860-$895 per ounce. Barrick remains committed to achieve its overall target of $30 million in savings from reduced general and administrative expenditures and overhead costs in 2015, reaching $70 million in annualized savings by 2016.

Currently, Barrick carries a Zacks Rank #3. The stock is currently trading at a forward P/E of 23.21, at a discount to the industry average of 27.03.

Goldcorp Inc. GG

Shares of Goldcorp gained 0.9% yesterday. Goldcorp is set to release its first-quarter 2015 results before the opening bell on Apr 30. The Zacks Consensus Estimate is at 10 cents.

Goldcorp expects an increase of about 20% in gold production in 2015 to between 3.3 and 3.6 million ounces. All-in sustaining costs are expected to be between $875 and $950 per ounce of gold. Goldcorp currently holds a Zacks Rank #3.
