As of late Friday the ceasefire in Gaza seems to be holding, if tentatively. While we should be pleased that this round of fighting appears temporarily on hold, we must realize that without changes in US foreign policy it is only a matter of time before the killing begins again.

It feels like 2009 all over again, which is the last time this kind of violence broke out in Gaza. At that time over 1,400 Palestinians were killed, of which just 235 were combatants. The Israelis lost 13 of which 10 were combatants. At that time I said of then-President Bush’s role in the conflict:

“It's our money and our weapons. But I think we encouraged it. Certainly, the president has said nothing to diminish it. As a matter of fact, he justifies it on moral grounds, saying, oh, they have a right to do this, without ever mentioning the tragedy of Gaza…. To me, I look at it like a concentration camp.”

The US role has not changed under the Obama administration. The same mistakes continue. As journalist Glenn Greenwald wrote last week:

"For years now, US financial, military and diplomatic support of Israel has been the central enabling force driving this endless conflict. The bombs Israel drops on Gazans, and the planes they use to drop them, and the weapons they use to occupy the West Bank and protect settlements are paid for, in substantial part, by the US taxpayer…”

Last week, as the fighting raged, President Obama raced to express US support for the Israeli side, in a statement that perfectly exemplifies the tragic-comedy of US foreign policy. The US supported the Israeli side because, he said, "No country on Earth would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders.” Considering that this president rains down missiles on Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and numerous other countries on a daily basis, the statement was so hypocritical that it didn’t pass the laugh test. But it wasn’t funny.

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with Israeli prime minister Netanyahu, but she refused to meet with elected Palestinian leaders. Clintonsaid upon arrival in Israel, “America's commitment to Israel’s security is rock-solid and unwavering.” Does this sound like an honest broker?

At the same time Congress acted with similar ignobility when an unannounced resolution was brought to the House floor after the business of the week had been finished; and in less than 30 seconds the resolution was passed by unanimous consent, without debate and without most Representatives even having heard of it. The resolution, H Res 813, was so one-sided it is not surprising they didn’t want anyone to have the chance to read and vote on it. Surely at least a handful of my colleagues would have objected to language like, “The House of Representatives expresses unwavering commitment to the security of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure borders...”

US foreign policy being so one-sided actually results in more loss of life and of security on both sides. Surely Israelis do not enjoy the threat of missiles from Gaza nor do the Palestinians enjoy their Israel-imposed inhuman conditions in Gaza. But as long asIsrael can count on its destructive policies being underwritten by the US taxpayer it can continue to engage in reckless behavior. And as long as the Palestinians feel the one-sided US presence lined up against them they will continue to resort to more and more deadly and desperate measures.

Continuing to rain down missiles on so many increasingly resentful nations, the US is undermining rather than furthering its security. We are on a collision course with much of the rest of the world if we do not right our foreign policy. Ending interventionism in the Middle East and replacing it with friendship and even-handedness would be a welcome first step.

Congressman Ron Paul of Texas enjoys a national reputation as the premier advocate for liberty in politics today. Dr. Paul is the leading spokesman in Washington for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency. He is known among both his colleagues in Congress and his constituents for his consistent voting record in the House of Representatives: Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the "one exception to the Gang of 535" on Capitol Hill.

Aside from the fact that I have no real idea why this article appears on 24h Gold, it is topical and again I find myself in agreement with RP.
Usually it is difficult to criticise Israel and their obvious disregard for international law, without being labelled an anti-semite.

Netanyahu is completely out of touch with reality and borderline psychopath. If he had his way he would bomb Iran as well and Obama who has said the USA will not back that action, would of course do so as soon as war started. They both piss in each others' pockets and its about time the rest of the world told them to stop before they start WW3.

As far as I am concerned the State of Israel is a festering canker on the middle east which is a god damned shame.

It is just so much easier to be peaceful and of course in saying that it takes Two to Tango.

THE SOUTH HAD A RIGHT TO SUCCEED BECAUSE THAT RIGHT WAS WRITTEN INTO IN OUR FOUNDING DOCUMENTS. The documents that our puppets have ignored to the benefit of them NOT the Republic.

You want to see vile racists and anti-semites Jimmy C get on Newsvine which is owned and controlled by NBC which is controlled by the CEO Brian L. Roberts who ,YOU guessed it is Jewish! Surprise there huh?
The comments about Palestinians who also happen to be semitic (jews don't own that phase yet no matter how much money they print)during the little israeli prison cleansing and who have been terrorized by the can do no wrong Israelis for 68 yrs. were as racist and vile as can be imagined. It is hard to believe that there are that many AMERICANS who feel that way about Palestinians when the only people the Palestinians bother are the israeli terrorists who took their land. SO maybe it was just racist Jews who commented or those US government dual citizenship Israelis who want to voice their opinions or sway others to their racist views? Why does 2.1% of the American population control so much of what we are being fed daily in News and entertainment? Why do they have complete control over ours and most of the other nations of the planet financial systems? Prove me wrong? Please prove me wrong?
The jews killed jesus and I find it quite hilarious that in the US of Israelica, the christmas celebrations are all controlled by the jewish owned, controlled and censored mass media. So called christians in the US letting the killers of Christ provide the backdrop for the celebration of his birth! Ironic to say the least.
If there is a buck to be made the jews will control who makes it. Oh,right they have a monopoly to make as many bucks as they want too! Prove me wrong?

Jim C your opinions are just a repeat of the propaganda we hear from the controlled mainstream media everyday ABC,NBC,CBS,CNN so why do you feel the need to repeat it? Are you getting paid?
Here is a comparison for you, http://whatreallyhappened.com/IMAGES/GazaHolo/index.html because as you beleive the palestinians are the animals.

Racism and anti-semitism at its most ugly from you: "The jews killed jesus and I find it quite hilarious that in the US of Israelica, the christmas celebrations are all controlled by the jewish owned, controlled and censored mass media. So called christians in the US letting the killers of Christ provide the backdrop for the celebration of his birth! Ironic to say the least."

That your article has not been condemned by readers and commentators here shows the depth of that irrationality and hate still gnawing at our society.

Let me quickly respond to a couple of the points you made. For your information, it was the Romans and not the Jews who killed Jesus. Yes, for centuries some Christians did believe this distortion of the facts and used that nonsense to conduct pogroms, especially around the time of Easter. And it is beyond ridiculous to think that Jews control how Christmas is celebrated in America. You provided no evidence to substantiate your claim because you could not. Jews could care less how Christmas is celebrated. Indeed, why should they even give it a second thought? It is not their holiday and in no way a concern of theirs. Jews are also very unopinionated when it comes to how Hindus celebrate Diwali or Muslims celebrate the Eid.

While i am here, let me ask you what you meant by "so called Christians in the US"? Is it that you mean that because they do not share your particular set of BELIEFS, they are not really Christians? On second thought, do not bother to explain. i do believe that i will have a better day if you just let it slide.

Keeping the record straight, I think you'll find that the Romans can be held up as the executioner of Jesus but the Jews, led on by the Pharisees, were the ones who handed Jesus over to be executed. After Pontius Pilot could not find Jesus guilty of any crimes the Jews kept pushing to have Jesus executed, Pontius gave in to the Jews demands and hence through their actions the Jews killed Jesus. They may not have been the ones to pound the nails but they were most certainly complicit in the death of Jesus. If hoots were given at that time, the Romans gave none when it came to matters which they considered of no consequence. On the other hand, the Jewish teachers of the law very much wanted Jesus dead so that their own misdeeds, greed, and pride would not be exposed any further.

Jim, a word if you please. When it comes to matters of Christianity and the Bible, you have a horrible batting average. Best to keep quite.

So how relevent is advice from a man who thinks the South had a right to secede from the Union with its slave system, that Iran is no threat building nuclear weapons, or that America was responsible for the 9/11 attack killing innocents? Not very.

In this article his anti-semitism seeps though: "But as long as Israel can count on its destructive policies being underwritten by the US taxpayer it can continue to engage in reckless behavior." Israel's reckless behavior? To a self-professed Libertarian to call Israel's response to the initiation of violence by Gaza "reckless" is more than inane. No wonder his son, Rand, split from his party. Israel has bent over backwards trying to live in peace with the Palestinians and, in return, has been the victim of countless bus bombings and rocket attacks.

History will not be kind to Ron Paul, as it has not been to Neville Chamberlain or Vidkun Quisling.

Jimmy, you astound me with your continued ignorance of what’s happening in the world. The Israelis have committed some of the most atrocious acts in history yet are not held to account for them because the good ole USA has got their back. They have carte blanch to do whatever they want to the Palestinians because they claim it’s for their state security. I very much doubt that the women and children they have killed were much of a threat to their security. Oh well, they claim, these were collateral damages and part of the process of defending themselves. If they, like the US, would stop meddling in other nations business they wouldn’t be targeted. When oh when will you and those like you learn this. You can’t go poking a grizzly with a sharp stick and expect him to ignore you. You mention Iran and nuclear weapons, they have none! Where we’re the WMD that Iraq had, that the CIA claimed they had irrefutable evidence to prove their existence? In another post you accused me of listening to conspiracy theorists, what about you? You seem to believe every lie that comes out of Washington, you never ever question these lies. You help the Washington propaganda machine further their lies. All it takes for any individual to get an understanding of what’s happening in the middle east is to look at the news. On a daily basis even the popular media provides information on how one sided the whole affair is and how the US is constantly stirring the hornets’ nest.

Nowhere in this article is there anything stated that isn’t true. Stop trying to be controversial, your no good at it. All you can do is drag up the same old cap, your chewing on a worn out chew toy like an old dog. Being a patriot does not mean you believe everything the government tells you, being a patriot means you look at what the government is doing and compare it to the rules it’s supposed to abide by and then judging its actions. In this case the US government rates an Epic Fail.

Ron Paul will be remembered, no matter what YOU think, as a man you stood up to be counted for what he believed was right. What he believes in is the constitution, individual rights, and of course justice. What will you be remembered for? Worn out chew toys?
