Just days after the tragic crash of a Malaysian Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine, Western politicians and media joined together to gain the maximum propaganda value from the disaster. It had to be Russia; it had to be Putin, they said. President Obama held a press conference to claim - even before an investigation - that it was pro-Russian rebels in the region who were responsible. His ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, did the same at the UN Security Council - just one day after the crash!

While western media outlets rush to repeat government propaganda on the event, there are a few things they will not report.

They will not report that the crisis in Ukraine started late last year, when the EU and US overthrew the elected Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych. Without US-sponsored "regime change," it is unlikely that hundreds would have been killed in the unrest that followed. Nor would the Malaysian Airlines crash have happened.

The media has reported that the plane must have been shot down by Russian forces or Russian-backed separatists, because the missile that reportedly brought down the plane was Russian made. But they will not report that the Ukrainian government also uses the exact same Russian-made weapons.

They will not report that the post-coup government in Kiev has, according to OSCE monitors, killed 250 people in the breakaway Lugansk region since June, including 20 killed as government forces bombed the city center the day after the plane crash! Most of these are civilians and together they roughly equal the number killed in the plane crash. By contrast, Russia has killed no one in Ukraine, and the separatists have struck largely military, not civilian, targets.

They will not report that the US has strongly backed the Ukrainian government in these attacks on civilians, which a State Department spokeswoman called "measured and moderate."

They will not report that neither Russia nor the separatists in eastern Ukraine have anything to gain but everything to lose by shooting down a passenger liner full of civilians.

They will not report that the Ukrainian government has much to gain by pinning the attack on Russia, and that the Ukrainian prime minister has already expressed his pleasure that Russia is being blamed for the attack.

They will not report that the missile that apparently shot down the plane was from a sophisticated surface-to-air missile system that requires a good deal of training that the separatists do not have.

They will not report that the separatists in eastern Ukraine have inflicted considerable losses on the Ukrainian government in the week before the plane was downed.

They will not report how similar this is to last summer's US claim that the Assad government in Syria had used poison gas against civilians in Ghouta. Assad was also gaining the upper hand in his struggle with US-backed rebels and the US claimed that the attack came from Syrian government positions. Then, US claims led us to the brink of another war in the Middle East. At the last minute public opposition forced Obama to back down - and we have learned since then that US claims about the gas attack were false.

Of course it is entirely possible that the Obama administration and the US media has it right this time, and Russia or the separatists in eastern Ukraine either purposely or inadvertently shot down this aircraft. The real point is, it's very difficult to get accurate information so everybody engages in propaganda. At this point it would be unwise to say the Russians did it, the Ukrainian government did it, or the rebels did it. Is it so hard to simply demand a real investigation?

Congressman Ron Paul of Texas enjoys a national reputation as the premier advocate for liberty in politics today. Dr. Paul is the leading spokesman in Washington for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency. He is known among both his colleagues in Congress and his constituents for his consistent voting record in the House of Representatives: Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the "one exception to the Gang of 535" on Capitol Hill.

In general I support Ron Paul's position against US military interference around the world, and am usually interested to read his blogs. However in this particular case his judgement is extremely poor, because the evidence is absolutely overwhelming the tragic killing of the innocent passengers flying over Ukraine was done by a Russian missile fired from territory controlled by the so-called Russian separatists, either by highly trained separatists or Russian operatives.

Knowing they were culpable, the separatists refused to allow access for several days to the crash site to outside observers, while they looted the bodies and wreckage for cash and valuables. Satellite photos show the missile launcher, then the launch vehicle lacking a missile, and afterwards the missile crew fled over the border from Ukraine into Russia. They initially boasted of having shot down the plane, and then tried to delete those messages.

Putin has to realize who was responsible for that reprehensible act, and by command responsibility he is complicit, at least in the attempted cover-up. Ron Paul's support of Putin is ludicrous.

Wow Mike, you seem to have swallowed everything the US media fed you. Well done, your on your way to becoming one of the indoctrinated drones the DC crowd desires to see at the voting stations.

In this particular situation almost the entire world, especially including Malaysia, Netherlands, Australia and other countries most involved, are unanimous in blaming Russian operatives firing a missile from territory controlled by Russian separatists in Ukraine, the evidence is absolutely overwhelming. Russian propaganda lacks credibility. It's a grievous error to automatically contradict every single piece of evidence from the U.S. government (unless maybe when it's from Dick Cheney).

Reverting to Ron Paul's initial remarks, in which he tried to use the context as a possible excuse, in my view there is no possible justification whatsoever for this horrible slaughter. Period.

"in my view there is no possible justification whatsoever for this horrible slaughter. Period." On this I agree with you. However just because most of the western world blames and believe it was Russia does not prove it was Russia.

As for the overwhelming evidence, where is it? The main stream media haven't presented anything beyond speculation. There have been some images of what is supposed to be a Russian BUK missile launcher supposedly in the Ukraine. For all the world knows the area in the images is in fact in Russia. It's all speculation built on what someone else said which was based on an opinion that was based on someone else's suspicions. In fact some of the so called evidence that has been brought forth has been proven to be created a day before the plane was shot down.

You miss the fact that Russia had nothing to gain from shooting the plane down. So who then did/does have something to gain, well that's an easy question to answer, the US government. And let me be clear, I don't blame the US citizens for any of this (expect for voting in this pack of cowards that occupy DC), the blame rests on the elected morons in DC.

Running around and repeating knee jerk unproven blathering's from the US government and its paid off allies simply makes you look like an idiot.

Ask for real proof! Ask why this aircraft was routed over a war zone? Ask who gains politically from this? Ask why its not mentioned by the media that the Ukraine military has in its inventory the same missiles as that which was used to bring down the aircraft? Ask if the US government clowns needed something to divert the publics attention from the fact the US economy is on a downwards spiral course? Ask why the media never mentions that the US helped overthrow a freely elected government in the Ukraine which is what started all this? Then ask why the US is calling on Russia to end this war? Ask why the so called evidence of intercepted radio transmissions are used to blame pro Russian insurgents for shooting down the Malaysian Airlines plane and not mention that days before this the insurgents shot down two Ukrainian military planes which is where these intercepted transmissions really came from? Ask how hard it would be for the Ukrainian military to 'produce' such recordings for their own propaganda purposes?

Until you can answer and verify these things it's best to just shut up.

The blood of the people on that flight is on the hands of Obama and his cronies in Washington until there is REAL (not NSA manufactured) evidence that Russia and specifically Putin was involved.

And by the way, the Netherlands have had little to say about Russia's involvement.

Mike you state "Russian propaganda lacks credibility." Really? You mean US propaganda has credibility? You mean propaganda in general has credibility? You mean propaganda is truth ( Four months after losing a jet somewhere in the Indian ocean/south pacific Malaysian airlines has a jet shot down over the Ukraine in another mysterious event. Coincidence? I don't think so Tim. Other airlines were flying over the same territory, in fact there was another flight just two minutes prior to MH17 using the same route, yet it was a Malaysian airlines flight that gets shot down? Anyone who has any sense can see that there is far more to this than us little people will ever get to know.

EDIT: "It's a grievous error to automatically contradict every single piece of evidence from the U.S. government (unless maybe when it's from Dick Cheney)." Really? And all the garbage that braying donkey Biden mutters is truth?

Good for you Congressman Paul. Unfortunately not everyone over there will like my comment. The US used to be called "The Land of the Brave" now it seems more apt to call it 'The Land of the Fools" by electing an even bigger one into the White House, and mostly because he promised a free ride along the way. "No! You Can't - nothing is for free anyway. I've read an independent source in the US stating that the actual un-employment rate in the US is closer to 37% than what is reported "Officially", and for those poor underprivileged voters that were promised "Change is coming" the change was that 1 out 4 of these households now have all members of those families jobless!
for example: and this only a snippet of the whole picture.

So they need the people to be looking elsewhere so they don't notice the mess at their own doorstep!! There are basically 2 ways to run a country and its economy:
The Things to do, and the Things Not to do: alas both of which seem to be beyond the grasp of the current management! With so many Western economies going through hard times, War seems their only viable solution to bring in some income, of course flying bullets and bombs can hurt you, so do that on somebody Else's turf.
