E ven the formerly august New York Times grants that Donald J. Trump has ignited a voter firestorm of grievance against a dumb show election process that rewards a craven avoidance of real issues. Immigration is actually a stand-in for the paralysis, incompetence, overreach, and bloatedness of government generally in our time — but it is a good doorway into the larger problem.

Immigration is a practical problem, with visible effects on-the-ground, easy to understand. I’m enjoying the Trump-provoked debate mostly because it is a pushback against the disgusting dishonesty of political correctness that has bogged down the educated classes in a swamp of sentimentality. For instance, Times Sunday Magazine staffer Emily Bazelon wrote a polemic last week inveighing against the use of the word “illegal” applied to people who cross the border without permission on the grounds that it “justifies their mistreatment.” One infers she means that sending them back where they came from equals mistreatment.

It’s refreshing that Trump is able to cut through this kind of tendentious crap. If that were his only role, it would be a good one, because political correctness is an intellectual disease that is making it impossible for even educated people to think — especially people who affect to be political leaders. Trump’s fellow Republicans are entertainingly trapped in their own cowardliness and it’s fun to watch them squirm.

But for me, everything else about Trump is frankly sickening, from his sneering manner of speech, to the worldview he reveals day by day, to the incoherence of his rhetoric, to the wolverine that lives on top of his head. The thought of Trump actually getting elected makes me wonder where Arthur Bremer is when we really need him.

Did any of you actually catch Trump’s performance last week at the so-called “town meeting” event in New Hampshire (really just a trumped-up pep rally)? I don’t think I miscounted that Trump told the audience he was “very smart” 23 times in the course of his remarks. If he really was smart, he would know that such tedious assertions only suggest he is deeply insecure about his own intelligence. After all, this is a man whose lifework has been putting up giant buildings that resemble bowling trophies, some of them in the service of one of the worst activities of our time, legalized gambling, which is based on the socially pernicious idea that it’s possible to get something for nothing.

I daresay that legalized gambling has had a possibly worse effect on American life the past three decades than illegal immigration. Gambling is a marginal activity for marginal people that belongs on the margins — the back rooms and back alleys. It was consigned there for decades because it was understood that it’s not healthy for the public to believe that it’s possible to get something for nothing, that it undermines perhaps the most fundamental principle of human life.

Trump’s verbal incoherence is really something to behold. He’s incapable of expressing a complete thought without venturing down a dendritic maze of digressions, often leading to an assertion of how much he is loved (another sign of insecurity). For example, when he attacked Jeb’s (no last name necessary) statement that we have to show Iraqi leaders that “we have skin in the game,” Trump invoked the “wounded warriors,” saying “I love them. They’re everywhere. They love me.” In the immortal words of Tina Turner, “what’s love got to do with it?”

Trump’s notion that he can push around world leaders such as Vladimir Putin by treating them as though they were president of the Cement Workers’ Union ought to give thoughtful people the vapors. It doesn’t seem to occur to Trump that other countries could easily get pugnacious towards us. He would have us in a world war before the inaugural parade was over.

The trouble is that it’s not inconceivable Trump could get elected. Farfetched, perhaps, but not out of the question. The USA is heading for a very rough patch of history — as those of you with your eyes on the stock indexes lately may suspect. The country stands an excellent chance of waking up some morning soon to discover it is broke and broken. When that happens, all the anxiety and animus will be focused on looking for scapegoats, and they are likely to be the wrong ones. World leaders considered Hitler a clown in the early going, too, you know. But the Germans were wild about him. He pushed a lot of the right buttons under the circumstances. Trump is worse than Hitler. And the American people, alas, are now surely a worse lot of ignorant, raging, tattooed slobs than the German people were in 1933. Be very afraid.

James Howard Kunstler has worked as a reporter and feature writer for a number of newspapers, and finally as a staff writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1975, he dropped out to write books on a full-time basis. His nonfiction book, "The Long Emergency," describes the changes that American society faces in the 21st century. Discerning an imminent future of protracted socioeconomic crisis, Kunstler foresees the progressive dilapidation of subdivisions and strip malls, the depopulation of the American Southwest, and, amid a world at war over oil, military invasions of the West Coast; when the convulsion subsides, Americans will live in smaller places and eat locally grown food.

You say, "Germans were wild about him [Hitler]". That's because Hitler delivered the gold from the Fed theft of America's gold bank deposits. See Rep Louis McFadden's 1934 Congressional speech calling for the arrest of the Fed for treason and theft causing to 30s Depression.

Trump would be even more popular if he stole China's 30,000 Tons of gold and threw it from a helicopter to the masses. Obama made and later broke every political promise he made while campaigning. Trump or anyone else can't be trusted either.

We must stand down government on all levels and go to strictly local private contracts among paying parties, guns, shame and the internet. Don't let the bastards get even a toehold. No government debt, no nothing. We can take care of our own damn affairs locally. Welcome to Ayn Rand World - the best part is that it's the default scenario and no hard heads needs to be convinced of Jack Sh*t.
In 1933 the Frankfurt School moved from Germany to New York City. There, its products included “critical theory,” which demands constant, destructive criticism of every traditional social institution, starting with the family. It also created a series of “studies in prejudice,” culminating in Adorno’s immensely influential book, The Authoritarian Personality, which argued that anyone who defends traditional culture is a “fascist” and also mentally ill. That is why anyone who now dares defy “PC” gets sent to “sensitivity training,” which is psychological conditioning designed to produce submission.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Herbert Marcuse translated the abstruse work of the other Frankfurt School thinkers into books college students could understand, such as Eros and Civilization, which became the Bible of the New Left in the 1960s. Marcuse injected the Frankfurt School’s cultural Marxism into the baby boom generation, to the point where it is now that generation’s ideology. We know it as “multiculturalism,” “diversity” or just Political Correctness.

That is the dirty little secret of Political Correctness, folks: it is a form of Marxism. If the average American knew that, I suspect Political Correctness would be in serious trouble.

It appears there is no such thing as an honest popular vote. Diebold and the electronic counters seems to have taken care of that several presidential elections ago. Whether it has been corrected or states are now requiring paper ballots is a mystery to me...main stream media appears to be mum on the subject. Several independent investigations in the past that proved corruption went nowhere and just withered away... in my estimation. This is memory from the past....correct me if wrong.
I like this article. Very observant.
"Cowardliness" pretty well describes politicians of all manner today. Gutless pretend leaders who are more concerned with 'the king's new clothes' so to speak than properly governing the nation.
There is a worldwide push from the third world which is making its way to first world countries to access the lifestyles we all enjoy. Leaders, if you can call them that, of all persuasion have done anything other than put illegal immigrants in boats and send them back because they fear losing a few votes from those among us who think with their emotions and refuse to understand that what is happening may destroy the way of life many in the western world have become accustomed to. And when its gone....its gone!
As for Trump the guy is not held hostage by the vested interests who provide election funding (for a price!!) but he is a really dumb ass and I fail to understand how Trump made the sort of money he has made. It would have to be luck as there is not too much between the ears....and even less when it comes out of the mouth. God help the guy.
Surely America can do better than Trump, even though some of what he says is correct. America needs a straight shooter with some intelligence though and Trump fails on the latter.
Tough times ahead? You bet. The $US is going to lose its reserve currency status (already under way), the huge debt is going to crush the nation and the lifestyle that rich Americans enjoy is going to vanish. And if things get really bad the downtrodden underclass after being pushed too far will after a century of manipulation from the rich revolt. "Let them eat cake"!!!
We live in interesting times.

Trump could possibly become worse than Hitler if as President he ignited World War III, but in the meantime he's not nearly as bad as various abysmally obnoxious politicians in this country, past and present, such as Dick Cheney. Describing Trump as already worse than Hitler is so wildly ridiculous it completely discredits anything else Kunstler says, and it trivializes all recent human history.

Kunstler is an absolute swine... he derides Trump, a guy who is his superior in every way, then even suggests that Trump's murder would be a good thing. IF this craven schlub would say that about our current Pansy disgrace, Bath House Barry... he might be arrested. Worse than Hitler? This simpering, bald POS must be insane. I hope Trump makes it to the WH... most of the other candidates are puppets of the corrupt banks and corporations.

Sometimes very smart people say very stupid things. To compare Donald Trump
to Adolph Hitler is an atrocity. James, you should be ashamed of yourself.

James, the flaws, defects and shortcomings you point out in Trump are all true. I, for one, would NEVER, EVER vote for Trump . . . . . . except for TWO rock-solid, set in granite, absolutely dependable, legitimate, resolute, credible and authentic reasons.

One: If “not” Trump then it will have to be someone else. ALL the others in the race (with the possible exception of Bernie . . no last name needed) are far, far worse than Trump.

Two: Every President, Congressman and Senator I’ve ever voted for has FAILED to represent me in every way possible. I know that Trump does not and will not represent me; however ~ there’s this “one-and-only” chance for revenge on the entire system that dragged us all, against our will, into this abyss. Trump is that revenge against all those nitwits. I’m NOT gonna pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity ! ! Trump ! !

Donald Trump will do the same as Prez Obama if ever elected by his rhetoric. I.E. not a damn thing...only will do whoever is pulling the strings will tell him to do.

That is the point sneezy. Trump is NOT getting election funding from those who own the game so he is in a unique position....although he will need the support of Congress. Maybe you have a point.

Howard Howard Howard... You state "After all, this is a man whose lifework has been putting up giant buildings that resemble bowling trophies, some of them in the service of one of the worst activities of our time, legalized gambling, which is based on the socially pernicious idea that it’s possible to get something for nothing."

Lets focus on that last part "pernicious idea that it’s possible to get something for nothing". This is the life force behind the socialist/liberal thought process. Give the masses something (social assistance) for nothing (then let them sit around and watch the Price Is right 24/7) which has been taken form those who actually work for their money. As a self proclaimed liberal (democrat) for life who has voted solely based on political party affiliation rather than qualification (yes, you voted for Obama twice when the man has never had a job or any formal training that qualify him to run a lunch truck let a alone the US) you should stay away from thoughts which result in you making such a gaff.

You sir are also a clown far to often.
