>The Problem With Little Teeny Farms 2: How Many Acres Can Sustain a Family?  - Nathan Lewis - New World Economics
In 1929, the record for potato yield was 32 tons per acre. Based on that yield, 3000 s.f. is enough to grow two tons of potatoes. That would provide sufficient calories for a family of four for 180 days. 6000 sf (<1/7 acre) is enough to provide all needed calories for a family of four for a year, and is doable in many backyards. Obviously, no one would be happy to only eat potatoes, but it does prove that the goal of sustainability is, in theory, attainable.
