>Syria and the Grand Plan  - Clive Maund -
There are many competing issues at play here and there would not seem to be a single answer that will satisfy all of them. At the centre of the current situation is Syria and all it represents. There are those who look at it through the lens of morality, others through the prism of its geographically strategic location and others still through one that focuses upon what the American response will say about America.

All are important perspectives. It seems however that the most important consideration of all in this is what the American response will say about America. Let us face it, the civil war has been going on for 30 months, claiming more than 100,000 deaths, causing countless scores of seriously wounded and creating some 2,000,000 refugees without receiving very much attention in the MSM. And Syria has always been located precisely where it now is, though its name may have been different on old maps. It has only become headline news of late because America, thanks to Obama, now faces an existentialist crisis.

Whether he bumbled into this position, or masterfully orchestrated the moment, what is important is what will result. Thanks to his red line proclamation, America must decide what its role in the world is to be. Though lacking in the ominous overtones of the Cuban Missile Crisis, this may be the most portentous moment since and the world waits with bated breath.

Before anyone writes in to advise me that the above map is old, and does not show South Sudan, I am aware of this but could not quickly find a better map... Read More
