One of the largest factors inhibiting the creation of sane and functional policies in the United States is our 'leaders' (I participate in the electoral process to hopefully be represented, not led) insistence on maintaining a global presence. This has helped create a national psychology of arrogance and self-deception, a squandering of valuable lives and resources and deep feelings of resentment and outright hatred in the nations we should be trading with rather than dominating or occupying. The ancient Asian proverb is most appropriate here: Mastering others is strength. Mastering oneself is true power.
