What intrigues me about the discussion about gold is how little is said about the other great benefit (or disadvantage, depending on which side of the fence you are on) of a gold standard, namely the fact that having a strictly adhered to gold standard makes it far more difficult for governments to wage wars. When you look at the beginnings of central banks (Bank of England, for example) they can be seen to have war as one of the prime reasons for their coming into being. It would be very interesting to have articles on this site exploring that issue in more depth.
