There is a simple way to get rid of the spent nuclear fuel rods, thorium burns most of the stuff up while producing safe power. They're still working on it but if they'd spent all the effort they spent to make nuclear weapons from uranium reactors, thorium would already be in use. The only government working with Lightbridge on a thorium plant is Russia, naturally the US government is getting too much campaign money from the uranium folks to do something so sensible.
