I have heard of rapid prototyping using 3D. My nephew invented an accessory for the Raspberry computer board and makes them on a 3D printer. If you do not know how to light a fire you look it up online and learn what to do immediately. I have learned how to build and repair guns online. How to repair my snowblower online, my dishwasher, my washing machine and numerous other things.
The people who manufacture kitchen and bathroom faucets and fixtures have been manufacturing them en masse with 3D printing for quite some time. I think you would do well to take a closer look at what is actually being done in this arena as we speak.
In terms of what the little guy can do to Goliath we need only look at the uneasy peace existing between the UK and the IRA. A number of years back some guy in Boston made a SAM missile with a chip burner, a backyard motion detector and model rocket motors. Using previousy unavailable compact inexpensive widely distributed tech the IRA shot down a Brit helicopter. Without the advantage of aerial dominance the Brits packed it in and made a peace agreement. This stuff is real and spreading very fast.
