As a follow up, I would recommend "The Edge of the Abyss", by Alfred Noyes. He pubished this in 1942, just as the US was entering WW2, and the UK was in one of it's darkest hours.
He was prompted to write his book by people who were at a loss to understand how two civilised, Christian nations had come to be at war with each other in - what at that time was - the catastrophe known as The Great War (World War One).
The disintegration of the Western standards (he proposes) began in earnest following that epic struggle.
Mr. Hultberg shows that disintegration continues apace to the present.
