If a university professor has been on the job for more than five years without venturing out into the world there's usually nothing to learn here. Academia has been overly insulated from reality for a very long time. I believe the last generation of academics who experienced a brush with how the rest of us live was the post WWll generation of adults. Usually a little war in one's life scrapes off the pretensions and causes one to understand the fundamentals of human experience a little bit more clearly.
