The really unfortunate thing about this story;
For that kind of money he probably could have hired someone with access to a modern performance jet to take him up high enough to see the curvature, and had the ride of his life while he was at it.

Or maybe paid for a first class seat on the right commercial flight and had a good meal and champagne.
