You are correct, history does recycle. And it has been long enough that all those who remember first hand what the last cycle of collectivist revolution was actually like, what life was like behind the wall, they are all gone. Yet we have Venezuela sitting in front of us as a stark warning, DON'T GO THERE. Very few are paying attention.
If we do have a collectivist revolution, it will be interesting to see if all those flyover red states as you call them, take it lying down. Will the country hold together? As you pointed out, war often unites people who would otherwise be at each other's throats. Who would we fight? As the Japanese noted during WWII, that there is a rifle behind every blade of grass in 'Merica, perhaps all the current and former members of the U.S. armed forces will remember their oaths to defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign AND domestic.

I hope the government shutdown lasts a few more months, long enough for people to realize that it is government that is the problem.
