The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is not about crime, and it is not about sport, or hunting. It is about the people maintaining a free society.

A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

And it does not say, guns, rifles, or howitzers. It says 'arms', as in armaments. Many think this ridiculous in modern warfare, what good are rifles against tanks and helicopters. Well, let's consider Afghanistan. A determined population armed mostly with rifles repelled both the Soviet Union and the United States armies.
