I own shares in a number of mining companies and have made losses on numerous occasions. One needs to understand the gambling nature for this end of the market, especially in small explorers, start ups or producers who are marginal. The bigger players like BHP can produce some nice dividends though.

You reference to government intervention applies mainly to third world countries.

Whilst complaints are understandable you fail to realise that a resource belongs to the country just like a crop in the field belongs to the owner of the land. In most countries what is in the ground belongs to the government irrespective of who owns the block of dirt so don't be surprised if the owners of the resource want a little more than the few crumbs which miners believe are suitable payment. And you can't blame governments for the fizzers as we all invest in the HOPE of an Eldorado but understand that more times then not this is not the case.
