Regarding looking for food in garbage bins and the rest...sadly this is something thas is being going on for a few years now. Spain has enjoyed economic development since the 1960s with the logical ups-and-downs during this long time, particularly downs in the 1970s, and early 1990s. Don't underestimate similar behaviour in other countries with similar lack of recent experience in really tough times.
