>The US Is Now the United (Police) State of America  - Doug Casey - Casey Research
Here we have from Casey the most morally repugnant remark a man could make about the Civil War: "While slavery was and is a wholesale criminal activity I object to in every way possible, the southern states did have the right to secede, both legally and ethically. But the question was settled by force, not reason, and the wrong side won."

The South had an ethical right to secede from the Union? Having controlled the Presidency and the Supreme Court for the majority of the first half of the 19th Century and pushed through their agenda to expand slavery to the newly formed states through the Kansas-Nebraska act of 1854 -- Southern slaveowners decided to leave the Union because the newly formed Republican party with Lincoln as President Elect were against such expansion. Those Southern 'gentlemen' initiated violence to do so. And Casey calls their actions "ethical"?

The South had a legal right to secede? What rights were the southern states being denied? Lincoln was still the President Elect when the South seceded -- he was in no position to use force on the South nor even hinted that he intended to do so. He wanted slavery contained, not expanded -- thinking it would eventually die a natural death. States do have right to secede if, and only if, the rights of their citizens are being violated. This was not the case: it was the South with slavery that was the violator of rights.

Not only that, but Casey says "the wrong side won." So the South ought morally to have won the Civil War, they ought to have been allowed to continue to maim, murder, torture, purchase and sell human beings.

This not just nonsense from Casey to be laughed off, but evidence -- to the extent that Casey is listened to and supported -- of a deep moral abscess at the core of our nation.

Beginning of the headline :At the beginning. America was founded as a confederation of independent countries – that's what a state is. Or was, in our language. The original United States of America was a confederation of countries that banded together for protection against larger and more powerful countries they feared might be hostile. This is not a disputed interpretation of history, but as solid a fact as the study of history produces – and yet a largely neglected one... Read More
