Location of the Yanacocha Project
Minera Yanacocha is located high in the Andes Mountains, 48 kilometers (30 miles) north of the city of Cajamarca, and 375 miles (603 kilometers) north of Lima.
 
History of the Yanacocha Project
After 10 years of exploration, in 1990, feasibility studies started for works at a pilot heap leaching plant. After successful results at the pilot plant were obtained, the project began in 1992. With the start of operations in Carachugo, the first bar of gold was produced on August l 7, 1993.
