Urumalqui is located in rolling pampas at 3600 metres elevation, a three hour drive from the coastal city of Trujillo. The land is used for growing potatoes; with major mines located 20 to 30 kilometres further east at Quiruvilca (Pan American Silver) and Alto Chicama (Barrick Gold).
