During the period 1894 to 1956, the area exploration was rudimentary, and conducted by means of pitting and shaft sinking on outcropping mineralised zones.

|
BIF units are the most common outcropping rock types, which are surrounded by carbonate altered and silicified meta-volcanic comprising quartz, chlorite, and carbonate. Distant From the mining centres the prevailing rock type is largely amphibolite, which is exposed in trenched and open pits, related to diamond workings.
