Location of the Porgera Project |
The mine is located about 130 kilometers west of the established town of Mount Hagen, 600 kilometers northwest of Port Moresby, and about 680 kilometers by road from the coastal port of Lae from which all materials are freighted. The mine is located at an altitude of 2,200 to 2,700 meters.

History of the Porgera Project |
An underground mine was operated from 1989 to 1997, and subsequently maintained and developed to provide long-term drainage for the open pit, and to provide access for ongoing exploration. The underground mining operation was recommenced in 2002 to extract underground reserves in the Central and North Zones.
