Newmont acquired Martha in February 2002 as part of the Normandy Mining acquisition. Through a series of transactions in 2003, Newmont acquired minority interests to give it 100% ownership of Martha.

Dates from an 1878 discovery, producing 5.6 million ounces of gold before closing in 1952. With higher gold prices, improved exploration and modern mining and processing technology, the mine reopened in 1988.
