Ojos del Salado mine is located about 10 miles east of Copiapó, in the Third Region of Chile.

History of the Ojos del Salado Project |
Ojos del Salado began commercial production in 1929 under the name Planta Punta de Cobre. Phelps Dodge acquired 10% of Ojos del Salado in 1983, becoming the sole owner in 1985. Sumitomo joined as a partner in 2005. It became part of Freeport-McMoRan when the two companies merged in 2007.

The Ojos del Salado mines are iron oxide and copper/gold deposits. Millable primary sulfide mineralization consists of chalcopyrite.
