the Koffiefontein Mine is operated by the Koffiefontein Mine JV, a joint venture between Blue Diamond Mines (Pty) Ltd, a 100% subsidiary of Petra Diamonds, and Lexshell 699 Investments (Pty) Ltd, a black-owned company representing Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSA) Petra bought the Koffiefontein Mine during 2007 from De Beers who owned Koffiefontein since the early 1900's.

The mine is located at the town of Koffiefontein, Free State Province in South Africa, 110 kilometres southeast of Kimberley.

Geology of the Koffiefontein Project
The main deposit is a kimberlite ore body known as the Koffiefontein pipe which forms part of a cluster of Group I kimberlite pipes and dykes that intrude Dwyka shales and Karoo dolerites. The surface area of the opencast excavations measure 44 hectares. Adjacent to the Koffiefontein pipe is a second kimberlite ore body known as Ebenhaezer pipe.
