The mining lease was granted by the Government of South Australia by an Act of Parliament for the period of 50 years from 1982, with a right of extension for a further period of 50 years.

Located 560 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia, Olympic Dam is a multi-mineral ore body.Most of Olympic Dam's employees live in Roxby Downs township, about 16 km south of the operations.
 
History of the Olympic Dam - non sulphide Au only Project
It is the world's fourth largest remaining copper deposit, fifth largest gold deposit and the largest uranium deposit. It also contains significant quantities of silver. The massive Olympic Dam orebody was discovered in 1975 and went into production in 1988. The operation comprises a fully-integrated underground mine and above-ground metallurgical complex.
