The Wilcherry iron mineralisation is hosted by sediments of the Lower Proterozoic Hutchison, which also host the iron ore deposits of the Middleback Ranges and base metal mineralisation at Menninnie. The Wilcherry Fe deposits comprise coarse grained magnetite formed by the metasomatic alteration of carbonate rich units in the Hutchison
