Location of the Homestake Mine |
The Homestake Mine was considered the oldest, deepest mine in the western hemisphere when it was shut down in 2002 after more than 125 years of continuous operation. Prior to its shutdown, however, Homestake was also the site of pioneering physics research in neutrinos in 1969, which won physicist Dr. Ray Davies, Jr., the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics.
