Why Natural Gas Futures Have Fallen Again Natural gas prices
NYMEX-traded natural gas futures contracts for January delivery fell by 3.8% and closed at $2.21 per MMBtu (British thermal units in millions) on Friday, November 27, 2015. Prices fell due to weak demand and mild weather forecasts. The United States Natural Gas ETF (UNG) fell by 3% to close at $8.71 in Friday’s trade.
US natural gas prices fell by 11% in November 2015 due to record inventory, a mild winter forecast, and weak demand cues. The updated report by meteorologists suggests weather will be milder in much of the United States for the next two weeks. Mild weather has contributed to weak demand, which has led to record-high inventories. Last week, the EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration) reported that natural gas inventories rose by 9 Bcf (billion cubic feet) for the week ending November 20, 2015, as compared with the previous week. The next EIA inventory report is scheduled for release on December 5, 2015. The record natural gas inventories are dragging natural gas prices to record lows.
