| L’effondrement de la production d’or sud-africaine est désormais évident. La production du pays a décliné de 50% au cours de ces trois à quatre dernières années, de 75% ces onze à douze dernières années, et de 87% ces vingt-cinq dernières années. Pour le pays, l’heure est grave. Il y a seulement douze à quatorze ans, l’Afrique du Sud avait produit un tiers des réserves d’or présentes dans les coffres du monde. Le pays a été réduit en gruyère ou sécurisé comme source de métal future. Les mines qui y opèrent encore sont très profondes, très fines, et demandent des efforts considérables pour qu’y soient réduits les niveaux d’eau et de chaleur tout en assurant la sécurité des mineurs. L’un de mes collègues a récemment déclaré que « puisque de nombreuses mines font jusqu’à cinq kilomètres de profondeur et que les tunnels ne mesurent qu’un mètre de large, que les teneurs sont en déclin et que le minerai y est extrait à la perceuse manuelle, elles devraient simplement être fermées dès aujourd’hui.
