Re : "... the shocking loss of national purpose ..... " "... a nation that hates what it has become ...."

There is a huge list of reasons why, but one would never know it from reading this article. For starters :

1. The Obama administration has openly played the race card at every opportunity, plunging race relations to a low not seen in 50 years.
2. Political correctness has placed the 1st amendment under attack, and has bred a new generation of crybabies and crybullies who demand "safe spaces".
3. The Obama administration has no real understanding of economics, and their only solution is to print money (via QE) to correct economic issues, issues which were initially created by asinine Federal policy in the 1st place.
4. The Obama administration has incurred massive debt, primarily to fund entitlement programs. Now approaching $20T, Obama will have incurred more debt than all prior administrations combined, by the time he leaves office.
5. The abdication of the Middle East by the Obama administration has enabled the rise of ISIS, and there are now wide swaths of territory under brutal, sadistic rule, where atrocities on a large scale are being perpetrated daily. No point going into exhaustive detail about how most of the ISIS weapons and vehicles have been supplied by the USA. Russia has certainly taken advantage of the power vacuum, and Putin has exposed Obama for the fool Barack is.
6. Selective enforcement of the law by the Obama administration, especially regarding immigration. The USA cannot instantly assimilate the 3rd world without occurrence of acute balkanization of the Republic. Open borders eventually leads to the destruction of the country.
7. The public proclamations by Obama and others that Islam is a "religion of peace". Sorry, we've seen too many people butchered in the name of "Allah" over the past 40 years, and most call bullshit on that.
8. For the first time since 1961, the US has no vehicle to launch people into orbit. NASA has been forced to lease seat space on Russian rockets in order to access the ISS.

This is the short list. The American citizen is being sodomized in a huge way by the political establishment, and many are awaking to that fact that we are quickly degenerating into a 3rd world nation.
