>The Banana Peel of Destiny  - James Howard Kunstler -
It took Kunstler 12 some paragraphs to get down to his usual mantra: "In fact, I am serenely persuaded that we would vastly improve our chances of remaining civilized if we gave up on mass motoring and deployed ourselves on the landscape differently." What was the engine of this 'serene' persuasion?" Certainly not common sense.

So, to remain civilized, we must give up our cars and deploy "...ourselves on the landscape differently." How? By walking? Bicycles? By that standard Calcutta is the most civilized place on earth. Kunstler is your typical go-back-to-nature environmentalist: either walk to work or take mass transit (and risk being beaten to death by thugs - a recent news story).

Why don't we just drill? Why doesn't he urge Obama to lift the moratorium he placed in the gulf? Why doesn't he urge the lifting of sanctions on coastal oil exploration. No, too much an action of independent individuals. We must all, instead, deploy "ourselves differently on the landscape."
