>Suspended Agitation  - James Howard Kunstler -
Kunstler is a master of the jounalistic sucker-punch. He's very good at it.

In this article, he jabs us with eight paragraphs of undisputed verve and has us saying, "well, yes, he's right." Then he sucker-punches us with paragraph number nine and expects us, again, to say, "yeah, right."

Ah, wrong. The lesson is not for the world to give up its "automatic machines doing all the work for us." Or for us "to more time spent on useful and necessary activities than on television fantasies." As for what these useful and necessary activities are, Kunstler is silent, though from past articles I can suspect it involves his usual mantra of "going back to a world made by hand." You see he would love to decide what is useful and necessary for us to do, no doubt backed by governemental edicts.

The lesson is, rather and very generally, less governement interference in economics that caused this mess in the first place. Kunstler is a humorous writer with an interesting vocabulary, but I advise wearing a protective helmet when reading him.
