On American Socialism

I'm giving Casey 5 states on this one, though I disagree with his dismissal of Romney as an alternative to Obama. Casey's critique of Alan Colmes and the progressive Socialism in American (currently led by Obama and the Democratic party) is a great one. Also, his opinion that coercive Social Security is morally wrong is spot on.

Here is a segment of the interview that illuminates the difficulty between the many conservative elements and organizations in American:

L: What about things like the military, police, and courts?

Doug: Well, I would argue that even those should be handled by the private sector, but I understand that many people can't get away from the idea that these services are core government functions that should not be privatized. That's because they fear they would not be fair and impartial – though it's a cruel joke to think that government courts today are fair and impartial. At any rate, I could live with it if government were limited to these core functions; but police and courts are only a tiny fraction of what government does today.

The defining issue is HOW MUCH authority ought governement to have? Limited to the military, police, and courts or no authority at all? Those believing the first are the orginial Libertarians and the Ayn Rand followers, and those believing in the latter (no government at all) are the Lysander Spooners, the Rothbards and the Modern Anarchists.

This is not a irrelevant difference and divides much of what ought to be a united front against the encroachment of Socialism.

Début de l'article :It's interesting how certain breeds of statist are now re-labeling themselves as "progressives." I guess they like the sound of the root word – progress – even though they only want progress towards collectivism. They used to call themselves "liberals," a word which in America used to stand for free minds and free markets. But they appropriated it and degraded it – classical liberals had to rechristen themselves "libertarians."
