Biblical dept forgiveness is an amazing picture of how God forgives man through Christ. We do not deserve forgiveness, cannot earn it, and are so far indebted to a Holy God we can never pay him back. John 3:16.

With regards to 'why not', I believe the amount of power associated with 'owning' everything via the world banking system will never allow forgiveness. Money is power and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This could lead to a discussion of various conspiracy theories but lets just say crisis on a global scale will only lead to global solutions and global leadership. See Revelations...
