| The Grasberg mine is owned and operated by Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), the principal and 91 per cent
owned subsidiary of the US based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold
Inc. (FCX). Under the terms of a joint venture agreement between Rio Tinto and
FCX, Rio Tinto is entitled to a direct 40 per cent share in resources
discovered after 31 December 1994. |

PT Freeport Indonesia commenced mining operations at this site in 1972 and in 1988 discovered the Grasberg mine. Today, after significant production, the Grasberg mining district contains the world’s largest recoverable copper reserve and the largest gold reserve.
