The Dallol Potash Project is located in the Danakhil Depression, a desert area in Northeast Ethiopia. The Project is located at the northern end of the Ethiopian Afar state, approximately 100 km from the Eritrean Red Sea Coast and 600 km via road from the deep water port of Djibouti.

The Danakhil Depression has been the target of several exploration programmes. Studies evaluating the exploration results since the preliminary exploration by an Italian company called Compagnia Mineraria Coloniale in the 1920s have indicated the potential for Potash production.

The geological history of the Danakhil Depression is connected to rifting processes of the Afar-Region and therefore strongly affected by volcanic activity and extensional tectonic faulting, resulting in displacement and folding of stratigraphic units.
