11:27 am Currency Commentary: Euro Rallies on CPI, Greece Hopes (:SUMRX) :

  • The Dollar Index slipped below the 97 level and is now testing 96 for support. The weakness is due to a surging euro which is rallying because of CPI data and rumors of a debt deal with Greece. The sell off in the DXY is a little surprising given its recent strength. But a failure to break above 97.80 support, coupled with a strong euro has led to some profit taking on the recent bounce. A poor April Factory Orders number has not helped the greenback but the dollar has been able to hold steady since the release of the news.
  • The euro has been able to bounce and rally back above 1.11. Earlier this morning, there were upbeat headlines about Greek creditors agreeing to a deal and the Greek government sending its proposal. The issue, as has been from the beginning, is how far these two plans differ. Both sides continue to discuss the need to come to a resolution, but it does not appear either one is prepared to bend at the moment. In addition to the numerous Greece headlines we saw the latest round of CPI data from the EU. It came in hotter than expected which has once again led to speculation of an early end to the ECB purchase program. Premature to be sure, but the inflation data is trending up over the past couple of months. The gradual escalation was predicted by the ECB, so one should not get the feeling that these numbers are catching them off guard. In addition, they still remain well below the 2% level.
  • The pound is seeing a nice bounce off that 50- and 10-- sma (1.5167) area. Not a surprise given the recent selling and the dip in the USD. Economic data has also provided support with the Construction PMI, Net Lending, and Mortgage Approval numbers all outpacing expectations.
  • The yen is up on the day but remains weak overall. Yen is showing some signs of stabilizing at the moment at this 1.24 level. The country saw a an uptick in demand for its 10-year paper at an auction as bid cover rose to 2.7x compared to 2.2x at its prior sale/
  • The RBA left its rate unchanged at 2.00% as widely expected. The Australian central bank said that " Having eased monetary policy last month, the Board today judged that leaving the cash rate unchanged was appropriate at this meeting". The RBA said it did expect further appreciation agaisnt the dollar. The Aussie has been holding the multi-year low levels in the 75-77 area for the past few months. It was seeing selling pressure into the meeting but has bounced on what is being viewed as relatively hawkish comments.
  • The Indian rupee is trading lower this morning after the RBI cut rates for the third time this year. The RBI has done a 25 bps cut in January, March and now June. The country's main rate now stands at 7.25%. Expectations are for another cut as the country looks to boost a slowing inflation number and growth. The rupee is trading in the 63 area which has set up as a consolidating area over the past two weeks (FOREX, BONDX).

The study met its co-primary endpoints demonstrating superior progression-free survival (PFS) and overall response rate (ORR.V).

  • The ELd arm demonstrated a 30% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death compared to the Ld arm (HR 0.70, 95% CI, [0.57, 0.85]; p = 0.0004). The PFS rates in the ELd arm versus the Ld arm were 68% versus 57% at 1 year and 41% versus 27% at 2 years, respectively. A significant ORR also was observed with 79% (74% to 83%) in the ELd arm compared to 66% (60% to 71%) in the Ld arm (odds ratio, 1.9; 1.4 to 2.8; p=0.0002). The safety profile was consistent with previously-reported studies and there were minimal incremental adverse events (AEs) with the addition of elotuzumab to lenalidomide and dexamethasone.
  • Also presented in a poster session at ASCO on Sunday, May 31 were results from the Phase II study that evaluated elotuzumab in combination with bortezomib and dexamethasone (EBd, n=77) versus bortezomib and dexamethasone (Bd, n=75) alone in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma [Abstract #8573]. Consistent with data from ELOQUENT-2, results from the Phase II study demonstrated a 28% reduction in the risk for disease progression or death in the EBd arm compared to Bd alone (HR 0.72, 70% CI, 0.59, 0.88). One-year PFS rates were 39% (95% CI 28%, 50%) for EBd versus 33% (95% CI 22%, 44%) for Bd. One-year survival rates were 85% (95% CI 75%, 92%) in the EBd arm versus 74% (95% CI 62%, 83%) in the Bd arm. 8:26 am S&P futures vs fair value: -7.30. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: -13.30. (:WRAPX) : U.S. equity futures continue holding modest losses while European markets have been able to climb off their lows.

Yesterday, the Dollar Index (96.75, -0.64) spiked more than 1.0% following a set of better than expected data in the U.S. Today, however, the index has given up 0.7% with the euro adding 1.0% against the greenback (1.1035) amid optimism that Greece will be able to come to terms with its creditors. That being said, rumors about a deal being 'close' have been a near-daily occurrence.

U.S. Treasuries hover near their lows with the 10-yr yield higher by four basis points at 2.22% while Germany's 10-yr bund has also sold off, sending its yield higher by nine basis points to 0.64%.

8:26 am European Yields (BONDX) : Sovereigns Try for Second Leg Lower

  • In the past 36 hours, the German 10-year Bund yield has spiked from 0.47% to as high as 0.67%. While that number is still below the high of 0.80% set on May 7th, Italian and Spanish 10-year yields have made fresh 6-month highs this morning, trading as high as 2.11% and 2.08%, respectively
  • The economic data in the periphery has been improving relative to the European core, and were Italy, Spain, and Germany not in a currency union, the changing growth dynamic would justify Italian and Spanish yields making new highs while German Bund yields did not. As these countries are, however, bound into a monetary union (for now), improving prospects for economic growth and prices in the eurozone as a whole should be reducing the credit risk of European sovereign debt. If that is the case, then Bono/Bund and BTP/Bund spreads might be expected to come in rather than getting wider since May 7th. More to come on this
  • The sellers of sovereign debt were encouraged by eurozone CPI data that came out higher than expected
    • Headline CPI grew by 0.3% in May after remaining unchanged in April. Expectations were for 0.2%
